It is mounted on the wall of
the Wharfingers house, an English Heritage Grade II listed building.
The house stands near the entrance to Bugsworth Basin at the end of the Peak Forest Canal, and where it connected to the Peak Forest Tramway that carried stone down from nearby quarries for loading onto the canal boats.
The Wharfinger was responsible for the operation of the basin and collecting fees from the canal boats. Outside the house the canal narrowed and the boats were stopped there to evaluate the weight of the boat.
