Livingston County was founded in 1837 from parts of McLean, LaSalle, and Iroquois counties and the county seat has been in Pontiac since that time. The current courthouse built in 1874-75 is the counties third. The courthouse was designed by architect J.C. Cochrane, who was one of the designers of the "Old State Capitol". The courthouse is in a Second Empire style. It is well maintain and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The county is now considering building a new justice center to relieve over crowding in the courthouse.
