At the corner of Washington Street and Fifth Avenue, the Metaline Falls Post Office is across Fifth Avenue from the Historic, now empty, Washington Hotel.

The first post office in Metaline Falls opened in late 1910, concurrent with the platting of the town by its founder and major driving force, Lewis P. Larsen. This is certainly not that original post office, as it is in a building (The Ricker Building) that was constructed in 1951.
Though in a stand alone building, the post office shares it with other businesses and organizations.
Metaline Falls grew up around large deposits of Zinc and Lead, and so was exclusively a mining town for the first decades of its life. Though there is much low grade ore left to be harvested in the area, no mining activity of note takes place at present. Metaline Falls, with a present population of about 280 souls, never was much larger, as its fortunes rose and fell continuously with the prices of and demand for lead and zinc. Its population peaked in 1930, at the beginning of the depression, at something over 800.
