The church was built in 1871-1879 by architect Joseph von Egle following the example of early Gothic Church of St. Elizabeth in Marburg an der Lahn. This church, dedicated to Maria, south of the city center is the first completely new construction of a Catholic church after the Reformation .The large church with two towers burning 1943 during World War II and was restored 1948/49. It was after the Cathedral of St. Eberhard, the second Catholic parish church of the former royal residence city of Stuttgart.
