Wilmington Notch DEC Campground has to be the smallest campground the DEC operates! Squeezed into a lovely pine woods between Rt 86 and the Ausable River, it is 9 miles north of Lake Placid, just south of the Olympic Ski Center (Whiteface Mt)

With no activities on site of its own (not even a playground), the greatest amenity this campsite has is its spectacular proximity to everything else in Lake Placid. My husband was able to jog to the Ski Center and Cloudsplitter Gondola Lifts up Whiteface Mountain. I drove a little further north to Wilmington to find the trailhead and hiked to the top of Whiteface. there were fly fisherman in the Ausable River whenever we passed it. And Lake Placid only seemed far away because of the highway speed limits!
