The first mention of a Florken van der Horst in the “leenaktenboek” of the counts van Gelder is from 1326 and he is perhaps the founder of the Castle. This also having regard to the results of the excavations, which point to about 1300 as the earliest Foundation date. The delicious rights of the village Horst (Berkele at that time) he had not, which belonged to the Lords of Meerlo. The castle was built around 1350.
Mr Johan van Meerlo (also known as of Mirlaer) bought about 1360 the Castle and after his death it became split. One half came in the hands of the Duke of Gelre and the other half in those by Johan van Broeckhuysen.
Now remaining only a port, cellar vaults and Tower fragments of the main Castle and the tithe barn. The castle ruin Huys ter Horst is worth a visit.
