Since 1983 , the Holland Cheese Museum has been as inseparably linked with Alkmaar as its world -famous cheese market on the Waagplein. Here on this square, in the historical Weigh House, the two most famous cheeses of the Netherlands are given top billing: the small sphere-shaped Edam cheese and the large wheel of Gouda cheese. Thes genuine Holland cheese originally come from the current provinces of North and South Holland.
Through the ages Alkmaar became a guinine trading center of cheese, where innumerable kilos of cheese were weighed and sold.
The “Cheeseheads” gradually made the small country of the Netherlands into a large cheese producing and exporting land.
Something we are very proud of in Alkmaar, the country’s cheese capital.
The Holland Cheese Museum therefore take great plasure to let everyone walk in to the world of Holland cheese. -Homepage museum
