The NRHP application read simply:
A one-story stuccoed fachwerk cottage with inset front gallery and salt box profile, of the German settler type. The building has a tin roof steeply pitched near the ridge. The roof is a modern replacement. The building is rectangular in plan with lean-to addition at the rear. The gallery has four bays and simple log posts. There are no chimneys. The front door is paneled and slightly off-center, indicating that the building was probably expanded to one side at an early date. The windows are sash type with six over six lights and shutters two windows have been replaced with four over four sashes. The timber framing and limestone walls of the Fachwerk are expose where the stucco is thin, especially at the rear. The Stephen Klein House in New Braunfels is a typical example of the type of structure built by the numerous German immigrants into Texas while it was a Republic and continuing into the seventies and eighties of the last century. It is a simple one-story and loft stuccoed Fachwerk building with full width inset front porch and lean-to rear room giving it an interesting and typical silhouette, with the overhanging roof of the front echoing the salt box shape of the rear. The building is not restored and the timber and limestone rubble Fachwerk shows through the stucco, especially in the rear.
Klein was one of many Germans who came to America during the 1840s. He left Hattenheim in 1844, and arrived in Texas in 1845. He built his home one year after Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels founded New Braunfels.
The building remains in good condition just south of the main town plaza.
