Middlefield Center began its development around 1783, the year of its incorporation, however there were a few small dwellings located here dating back to 1769. The town center is predominately on the Skyline Trail where it intersect with Bell Road. Today it is a community of farmers, commuters, second-home owners and others who work from home, however it has maintained its rural agricultural look and feel with open fields, barns, farmhouses and the fairgrounds. The town has supported a small population, never rising above 900 which required very little development in the 20th century. In the 1800's other than farming it did support a summer vacationing crowd with 2 inns.
