In Sleepy Hollow, within the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, is this monument for Edwin Lister.
The cemetery is located off New York Route 9, just north of the village center, on the east side of the road. There are two entrances. The main entrance is where the administration office is located, which is where you can locate a map that shows where this and other notable landmarks are located. The marker is located off Lincoln Ave in the southern half of the cemetery.
The marker is made of stone (grey granite) and stands over 12 ft high on a moderately sloping hill. It has a wide face and narrow depth. The front faces west toward the road. There is a lot to the design. The base has several levels. One block has intricate floral designs carved into it. Above it is a block with the name "Lister." Laying on the blocks is a full carving of a woman how looks on - not sure if her expression is one of grieving or not. Above this are four columns surrounding a tablet. On the bottom is the following text:
"EDWIN LISTER/BORN SEPTEMBER 10, 1829/DIED MAY 18, 1898/LISTER unsigned"
Above that is a bust of Lister backed by a concave shell feature. Lister is in a beard and looks slightly toward the right. Above this, the columns support an ornate block.
Edwin was a local owner of a business in Newark, NJ that made fertilizer from cow bones.
