Union Depot, also known as the Canaan Station, is a large train station built at the intersection of 2 railroads. The tracks literally crossed one another one running East to West and the other North to South. These RR's were to become the Central New England and the New York, New Haven and Hartford RR. The station was completed on Dec 6,1872, designed by Chief Engineer Shunk and general contractor was GH Bundy of Lakeville. A large tower is located where the 2 ells join. Passenger service was discontinued in April 1971. Currently Union Depot is undergoing revitalization.
