Westfield is known as "Whip City" due to the whip manufacturing performed in the town. The buildings for the complex were used from 1888 to 1928. The complex is also part of the Westfield Center Historic District. Westfield had multiple whip companies, however the US Whip Company was the largest, employing more than 300 workers and shipping more than 100,000 whips per week. The company had a second factory in Ohio and sales offices throughout the US.
