A convicted rapist and devil worshipper, John Peter Barrie, escapes from a prison infirmary. Morse and Lewis are tasked with tracking him down. Their job is made difficult as Barrie is a master of disguises. In their search they talk to Barrie’s prison therapist, Dr Esther Martin, and an expert on the occult, Rev Humphrey Appleton.
Barrie abducts Holly Trevors, wife of Steven Trevors, a former partner in crime of Barrie. He later lets her go. He also makes a demand that he wants to meet Dr Martin on Lammas day, a pagan festival of fire.
Lewis investigates the occult angle and goes to an occult bookshop. On their mailing list is an Oxford college staff member, of the same college that employs Steven Trevors as an odd job man. Morse, on the other hand, is convinced someone is helping Barrie with money, make up and providing transport in the form of a van that hasn’t been reported stolen.
On Lammas Day evening a group of devil worshippers are celebrating a black mass when a ring of fire erupts. Steven Trevors is burnt alive. The devil worshippers are traumatised by the fire, and the appearance of a goat headed figure called the Master. The leader of the devil worshippers is the Oxford college staff member.
Barrie attacks Holly Trevors again and is wounded by her in the attempt. Dr Martin agrees to meet with Barrie at a safe house. The police surround the house and Barrie lays down his gun, asking to speak to Morse. Morse goes forward and Barrie draws a second gun, given to him by Dr Martin. A police woman shoots Barrie dead.
Morse questions Dr Martin and realises that she organised Barrie’s escape. Dr Martin had been Barrie and Trevor’s first rape victim and had managed to eventually be assigned to the psychiatric hospital. She arranged the escape so that Barrie would kill Trevors and then she could kill Barrie, except that the police woman did it for her.
