I recovered this U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey triangulation station from 1952 in good condition. It's located near a U.S. Forest Service BM (MX0997) at the summit of Herd Mountain and near Herd Lookout House. The disk has had a metal nail drilled through the center of the triangle of the disk face.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1952 (WRH) STATION IS LOCATED NEAR THE HERD MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT HOUSE, ON HERD MOUNTAIN, AIRLINE, ABOUT 14 MILES NORTH NORTHEAST OF WEED AND 3 MILES SOUTHWEST OF GRASS LAKE AND THE GRASS LAKE RAILROAD SIDING. STATION IS REACHED FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAYS 99 AND 97 AT WEED, BY GOING NORTHEAST ON U.S. HIGHWAY 97, TOWARDS KLAMATH FALLS, FOR 17.7 MILES TO THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. CONTINUE NORTH FOR 1.7 MILES TO THE ENTRANCE TO THE GRASS LAKE FIRE GUARD STATION. TURN LEFT, WEST, CROSS THE CATTLE GUARD, TURN LEFT AT A Y FORK AND GO 0.6 MILE. TURN RIGHT AS PER SIGN HERD L.O. AND GO UP GRADE FOR 4.0 MILES TO THE END OF THE ROAD. FROM HERE FOLLOW THE TRAIL FOR 100 YARDS TO THE LOOKOUT HOUSE AND THE STATION. STATION MARK, STAMPED HERD 1952, IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A BOULDER PROJECTING 4 INCHES. IT IS 14 FEET WEST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE LOOKOUT HOUSE, 8 FEET WEST NORTHWEST OF THE FLAG POLE AND 15 FEET EAST OF THE RIM OF THE PEAK.
