This is a state of California Registered Landmark but it also is dedicated as E. Clampus Vitus No. 3.

The small plaque at the bottom reads:

"Rededicated, April 11, 2014, Placer Co. Hist. Society &
E. Clampus Vitus No. 3, and so recorded."

Ophir is a small town, with just 162 residents. It is located just west of Auburn, Califoria in Gold Rush country.

The plaque above it is State Registered Landmark No. 462 and reads in part:

"TOWN OF OPHIR"

"Founded in 1849 and first known as 'The Spanish Corral.' Area
proved so rich that biblical name of Ophir adopted 1850.
Polling 500 votes almost totally destroyed by fire in 1853."


Ophir is a port mentioned in the Bible, where King Solomon received a shipment of gold, silver and sandlewood. Ophir was known for its wealth.

The town of Ophir, California has just 162 residents. It is a rural agricultural center but was best known for rich deposits of gold mined in the 1850s. It is just 2 miles west of the larger city of Auburn, in Placer County, California
