Patrick Pennyman, undertaker in Fletcher’s Cross, is found dead in his chapel of rest by his wife, Janet. He has been hit over the head, but his wrists were also cut. Murder, clumsily dressed up as suicide.

Mr Pennyman was a cheapskate that used to swap coffins and rob people of their valuables. He had fallen out with his former partner, James Griss, over how the business was run. As well as James Griss, there was a part time employee, Thomas Marr, who runs a crystal shop in Causton. Marr is a member of a spiritualist circle, but does not have an alibi for the time of the murder. John Whittle, a local handyman made coffins for Pennyman.

Whilst Barnaby is investigating the murder, Joyce attends a spiritualist meeting with an old friend Elizabeth Key. Later Joyce visits Elizabeth at her home. Elizabeth tells her that she is investigating Pennyman for a broach that was supposed to be buried with her mother, that later turned up in a local antique shop, and also the spiritualists that had known secret details of her father, that caused her mother great anguish. After Joyce leaves Elizabeth is struck down in her garden and her wrists cut.

Barnaby now has two connected murders. Before he can solve the murders, a third murder occurs. John Whittle is found murdered in the same manner alongside the railway tracks of the local steam railway. James Griss is a volunteer there and tells Barnaby he saw Thomas Marr by the track that night.

A break comes when Barnaby is visiting Janet Pennyman. Ronald Burgess, local choir master arrives bearing flowers and a bottle of champagne. Barnaby now knows that the murders were about an illicit love affair between Ronald Burgess and Janet Pennyman. Interviewing the couple separately, and with a little lying from Scott, the couple confess.
