A faded rock group, Hired Gun, reform to play at the Midsomer Rock Festival and stay at the manor house of the lead singer Gary Cooper. On their first number at the concert the lead female vocalist, Mimi Clifton, is electrocuted by a live microphone. An attempt is made on the life of Jack ‘Axeman’ McKinley when his trike has a petrol leak and explodes. Nicky Harding, the drummer is finally found drowned in the back of his car in the swimming pool.
Suspicion turns to a missing band member, who disappeared after a car crash in a quarry. Royalties should have been shared between Gary and the missing member. It turns out that the band member is dead, however his brother and niece are on Gary’s staff without Gary knowing. It would seem the brother had motive to avenge his brother’s death, however Barnaby has other ideas. A photo provides a clue which leads to the Axeman’s wife. The wife, an ex groupie, is mentally wrecked and her daughter is also mentally impaired. Jack, the Axeman wanted to wipe out the other band members in revenge for what the group had done to his wife.
