Grady Felton is released from prison, where he was held for murdering Daniel Denning in the village of Binwell. When he was imprisoned he swore to kill everyone who had a hand in him being charged. He returns to Binwell by bus. Whilst en route his defence lawyer is found murdered. Locals seek revenge by burning Felton’s house down. Felton survives the arson attack, but is hospitalised. Whilst he is in hospital further murders occur.
Barnaby believes that Felton cannot be committing the murders, but Jones, who worked on Felton’s original case, does not agree. The conflicting views are resolved when the pathologist discovers that the prints of Felton in hospital are not those of Felton the killer. The Felton that returned to Binwell is in fact a cell mate of Felton. Felton himself is on the loose and committing the murders. In the climax to the episode Felton attacks Ted Denning and DS Jones in the generator room of Denning’s house. Barnaby intervenes, as does Deirdre Denning. In the end it turns out that Felton did not kill Daniel Denning all those years ago, but that Deirdre Denning had accidentally killed him.
In a side story to the main event, Barnaby and Jones are required to pass a police fitness test. The test and their training occur in Chesham park. Ironically Barnaby beats Jones in the race.
