DI Clifford is investigating some bizarre murders, where victims have their hearts carved out. He gets a breakthrough when he hears a radio interview with an authoress called Natalie. Natalie has written a book about a Carpathian duchess who killed her lovers in a similar manner to the victims.
Clifford tracks down a descendant of the countess and comes to suspect her nephew. However, when more murders occur and the nephew is ruled out, Clifford has to look elsewhere.
Meanwhile Clifford has started a relationship with Natalie. With the nephew out of the frame, Clifford starts to suspect Natalie. He searches her house and finds nothing, largely because Natalie changes into the countess away from home, in a motel. Clifford tries to make it up to Natalie, but is killed by Natalie dressed as the countess.
Natalie kills one more time, a jogger she meets in the park. Having lived out the countess fantasy, she turns her attention to writing another murder biography.
