The tower was built in 1992 for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The location of the transmitter is in the center of Olympic Park. It was used to have better broadcasting reception for the olympics and was used by mainly NBC and the experimental Olympic channel at the time. It was built with architecture in mind. When looked from the right angle, you can see an athlete running with the Olympic flame. Today, the tower stands defunct, but it still stands as a reminder of how the world viewed these games.
The tower depicts an athlete running with the olympic flame. Today, it just stands tall as a monument and a memorial to the fun at the 1992 Olympic Games at Barcelona. It also acts as a sundial, using the pillars in the Olympic Park plaza to tell the hour of the day. The top part serves as a benchmark for surveying.
Taken from Wikipedia, "Overall view; The Montjuic Communications Tower (Torre Telefónica) is a telecommunication tower in the Montjuïc neighborhood of Barcelona. The white tower was built for Telefónica to transmit television coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics Games in Barcelona. The 136 m (446 ft) tower is located in the Olympic park, and represents an athlete holding the Olympic Flame. The basement is covered with 'trencadís', Gaudí's mosaic technique created from broken tile shards. Because of the tower's orientation, it works also as a giant sundial, which uses the Europa square to indicate the hour." Source: (
