Van Isle is the largest of seven marinas and yacht clubs in Tseum Harbour, Sidney. In front of the office, Van Isle maintains a nautical flagpole with appropriate flags flying. The Canadian, US, UK and BC flags are easily recognized but the blue ensign with an unusual crest is less recognized. This is the flag of the original colony of Vancouver Island established in 1848. The Vancouver Island flag flew until 1866 when mainland British possessions were incorporated into the expanded colony of British Columbia. This colony joined the Canadian federation, the Dominion of Canada as a province in 1871 with the promise of a Trans-Canada railroad, the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The crest of the Vancouver Island flag is interesting. In the white circle are various symbols, Neptune's trident symbolizing the sea crossed with Hermes staff, the Caduceus symbol of two serpents around a staff topped with the wings of Mercury. This is the symbol for commerce. A pine cone and beaver icons symbolize the wealth of natural resources.
