From nearby informational sign: "Class NE1 - 30 foot Wooden Waycar with Steel Underframe Applied." Built in 1890 at Aurora, IL as Waycar #14497 for the CB&Q Railroad. Renumbered 11007 when merged with Burlington Northern. Acquired by the Mundelein Park District from the City of West Chicago in July 2001. BN had donated it to West Chicago in October 1976.

This fun-filled and educational destination was once a former train depot along the Mundelein Soo Line. Exhibits feature railroad memorabilia, Mundelein's first fire truck, a model of a 1900s school house, pioneer tools, quilts, antique Lake County maps, 1774 flint-lock gun, war uniforms, Diamond Lake artifacts and more. Fort Hill Heritage Museum - 1890's Caboose An on-site 1890 caboose is a great and authentic highlight.
Fort Hill Heritage Museum is operated by the Historical Society of the Fort Hill Country. Parking area is available. Hours are Saturdays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (closed January and February).
