The town of Wells, also know as Wellsdale, was wiped out for the construction of Camp Adair during the early days of WWII.Though many rumors had circulated about the possibility, it still came as a shock to the residents. Government men showed up at the tiny schoolhouse one morning and told the teacher that they had to be out by the end of the day, they were! Everyone had to find a new farm, or home somewhere else immediately. This caused a lot of heartache, but it was wartime, and it was done. Any family burial plots were unearthed and moved North to the new Smith and English Cemeteries located West of Fircrest Cemetery on Helmick Road about a mile South of Monmouth. These cemeteries are waymarked. Because Camp Adair is now also a "Ghost Town" Wells can be considered a ghost town within a larger ghost town.
