Samuel Johnson Civil War Monument - Connellsville, Pennsylvania
This monument was created and dedicated in September 2012 by Mike Parlak, Jr. as an Eagle Scout Project. The monument was also landscaped; solar lighting keeps the monument displayed day and night.
The granite monument was purchased by Connellsville Memorials and is being engraved by Davis Monuments of Scottdale. A dedication ceremony was held following the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam.
Eagle Scout Michael Parlak Jr. of Boy Scout Troop 101 took the lead to make sure Johnson was properly recognized by the Connellsville community. He recently completed construction of a monument to Samuel Johnson that was dedicated at the ceremony.
Samuel Johnson, a Connellsville native, served with the 9th PA Reserves (part of the First Army Corps) during the Civil War. In September 1862, he was wounded and captured two battle flags from Texas Confederate troops at the Battle of Antietam.
