A circular fountain in the plaza at Third and Main pays tribute to the many presidents who have spoken from the Old Courthouse steps to the citizens of Dayton. A series of plaques, one for each president, is located around the circumference of the fountain. Each plaque contains the words of the president. The main plaque about the fountain reads:

THE FOUNTAIN OF PRESIDENTS

The corner of Third and Main streets has long served as the focal
point of our community. Since 1850 the Old Courthouse has been a
silent witness to a constant succession of events marking history of
our community and of our country. We sent our soldiers off to war
from this corner, and here we later celebrated their homecoming. The
Wright Brothers were honored here during their triumphant return from
France in 1909. A few short years later, this is the place where the
"promises made in the attic" were redeemed after the flood of 1913.

Dayton citizens, residents of what is widely regarded as the most
typical of American communities, have repeatedly gathered at Third
and Main to see and hear a procession of our nation's Presidents and
would-be Presidents who use this setting as a stage from which to
inspire and persuade. The words gathered here reflect the personalities
of our leaders as wellas the issues and ideas of their times which have
formed and continue to shape our history.
