Location: The official address for Barwell Park is 921 Alenmede Crescent, Ottawa, Ontario. This tiny park is located at the corner of Alenmede Crescent and Barwell Avenue in the Fairfield Heights neighbourhood in western Ottawa. There is no sign to advertise the park’s status as a City of Ottawa park.
Description: Barwell Park is very small, almost a micro-park. It is rectangular, about 40 meters long by 20 meters wide, with the ground rising as one moves from the northwest side to the southeast side. The upper southeast half of the park consists of a mowed grassy area. The lower northwest half contains a children’s play structure surrounded by sand. Within the park, there are six benches, some trash containers, twelve trees, and some shrubs. There are three signs indicating that no dogs are allowed, one such sign for each of the three entrances leading into the park, two of them from Alenmede Crescent, and one from Barwell Avenue. There are multiple interconnecting asphalt paths within the park, including one each to the park’s three entrances.
Barwell Park appears in the City of Ottawa's official database of municipal parks. (See link URL.) It is not searchable by name in either Google Earth or Google Maps, though the latter’s Street View feature contains several images of the park along both its Barwell Avenue and Alenmede Crescent frontages. Neither Google Earth nor Google Maps identifies Barwell Park as a park, either by shading or via an icon. It should perhaps be noted that several other Ottawa area parks, including parks considerably larger and with more facilities than Barwell Park, , e.g., nearby Ruth Wildgen Park, are not searchable in Google Earth and Google Maps, and have no icon in those applications to identify them as parks.
Barwell Park makes for an interesting contrast with its nearby neighbour, Bellfield Park. Relative to Barwell Park, Bellfield Park is roughly twice the area, is searchable in both Google Earth and Google Maps, showing up on both of them with a park icon. However, Bellfield Park has no paths, no benches, no play structures, fewer trash containers, and two fewer signs prohibiting dogs. Wear patterns in the grass suggest that Barwell Park gets considerably more use.
