"The Alma Public Library was founded in July of 1965 when mayor Roy Comer appointed five area ladies to the Alma Library Board. Mrs. W.E. Hunzicker operated the new library out of a small corner building at the end of Fayetteville Avenue. The original collection included 600 items. In 1969, the Alma Public Library became part of the Ozark Regional Library System. The Alma Public Library’s first move occurred in 1979 when the city of Alma built a city complex with space for the library. As the Alma Public Library continues to grow it has since moved twice. In 1996, the Friends of the Alma Public Library was founded by local citizens. This organization was instrumental in the next 2 moves of the Alma Public Library. 1999 was an extraordinary year for the Alma Public Library. The Ozark Regional Library System dissolved, the Crawford County Library System was formed with a new library board and soon a new library director and the Alma Public Library began the remodeling of 624 Fayetteville Ave. With the assistance of many volunteers, the Alma Public Library opened the new larger library on March 13, 2000. Nearly 10 years later this expanded facility provides 9 public access computers, wireless internet access and over 40,000 items including books, audio books, DVD’s, a Young Adult collection for teens, an extensive children’s collection and downloadable audio books."
