Steele High School was named for Robert Steele, a Dayton educator. It stood on the SE corner of Main Street and Monument Avenue, where this obelisk is. It was built in 1894 and was home to all of Dayton’s high school students until 1906. The school school colors were red and black and the school mascot was Leo the Lion.
The Steele HS was closed in 1940 and was demolished in 1955.
The monument can be seen in
Google Street View.
