EN: The Devil's Tower is located in a residential zone west of the historic town center. Probably it was either a remaining part of the episcopal castle that was destroyed here in 1262 or it was built of the remains of that castle, but it was not mentioned before 1435. IT was integrated in the city walls and had a direct connection to the parapet walk from its upper floor. Its name was "Wisse Turm", after the name of the citizen Hans Wyss, who lived close to it. Later it was called "Veltin Bernhards Turm", "Sankt Bernhardsturm" and "Sankt Veltin Turm".

The current name came up in the 15th or 16th century when the witch hunt was particularly harsh in Alsace. The tower was used as a prison, where the assumed witches were imprisoned, tortured and probably also executed.

Later the tower served as a general prison. A cell door, covered with graffiti at the inner face, can be seen at the history museum.

In 1904 the tower was partially destroyed by fire and restored in 1906. It was listed a "Monument Historique" in 1929.
