The clock sits at the very top of the tower, which has four sides for for different clocks displaying the same exact time so it can be seen in a 360 degree view around Gran Vía. The clock is about 10 feet in diameter. Although it is not lit up at night, it still adds to the uniqueness of Madrid's Time Square. The clock itself sits nearly 300 feet into the air and can be seen throughout Gran Vía. This building was inspired by buildings of New York City. "During the Spanish Civil War it was used as an observatory by the Republican forces to watch the whereabouts of Francoist troops. This reason, and the fact of being the Office of Foreign Press, made it a target of bombings during the war. Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry sent their reports from inside the premises."
