Location: The official address for Kilreen Park is 1250 Southwood Drive Road, Ottawa, Ontario. This family-oriented, community park is located in the Kilreen Park neighbourhood of western Ottawa; in Ottawa, the real-estate designation for a neighbourhood often derives from the local parks. In terms of major traffic arteries, Kilreen Park is about half a kilometer to the southeast of the intersection of the Queensway with Greenbank Road. An official City of Ottawa park sign bearing the 1250 Southwood Drive address appears at the park’s main entrance in the southeastern portion of the park.
Description: Kilreen Park is a relatively small park, stretching roughly 330 meters along its longest, north-northwest to south-southeast, dimension; it is fairly thin, only about 70 meters across at its widest. The park’s only frontage onto a city street lies in the vicinity of its official address. The rest of the park’s perimeter abuts the back yards of neighbourhood homes. However, two east-west asphalt paths within the park provide important neighbourhood pedestrian shortcuts between Southwood Drive and Stanton Road.
In appearance, Kilreen Park is primarily a mowed lawn area containing a variety of recreation facilities. The southern portion of the park, adjacent to its official entrance, contains a lighted soccer field, with the lighting provided, rather atypically, by converted street lights. To the north of the soccer field there is an area focused on activities for families and smaller children. Facilities in this portion of the park include picnic tables and benches, a small splash pad for water play, swings and a children’s play structure, and a rarely utilized lone basketball hoop set in the middle of a grassy area. Further north, there are two unlighted asphalt tennis courts in a fenced enclosure. The northern third of the park is primarily open lawn, containing as its principal feature one of the paved pedestrian paths serving as a shortcut between Southwood Drive and Stanton Road.
The September 2013 Google Earth satellite imagery for Kilreen Park shows two rows of mature trees along the park’s eastern and western sides. Those trees were primarily ash trees, and with the infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer that is reliably fatal to ash trees having reached Ottawa’s west end, all of them have been cut down. As of the submission of this waymark in the spring of 2014, there remain only two rows of stumps 30 to 70 centimeters in diameter along the sides of the park. Only a relative few trees that were not ash trees, e.g., maples, remain of the once stately treed rows.
Kilreen Park appears in the City of Ottawa's official database of municipal parks. (See the URL link.) It is searchable on Google Earth, and Google Maps, with several images of the southern portion of the park available via the latter’s Street View feature.
