Whippletree Junction is a quirky little collection of heritage buildings beside the Trans-Canada Highway in Cowichan Bay. In the late 1960s, Randy Streit began to save buildings scheduled for demolition and had them moved to this location. Several buildings, including the first one to move here, came from the old Chinatown in nearby Duncan when that area was being cleared for new development. Other buildings include a former fish cannery from Sooke, a post office and bank from Cobble Hill, and even a bar from the abandoned saloon of a ghost town in Montana. Today, Whippletree Junction houses a number of popular shops and is a hit with tourists due to its Old Western-style ambiance, history, and wares. Randy Streit passed away in 2001 at the age of 64.
