On Friday, June 16, several Pennsylvania dignitaries celebrated the 50th anniversary of Story Book Forest. Several political leaders and officials were on hand for remarks, a ribbon cutting and dedication of Story Book Forest's "Dreams are Real" Memory Lane during its Ligonier Valley Community Day Picnic. Key individuals attending the celebration include R.Z. Macdonald, former manager of Story Book Forest and family member of former Park owners; Pennsylvania State Senator Donald White - Senate District 41; Westmoreland County Commissioner Phil Light; Ligonier Mayor Butch Bellas; Idlewild Park
General Manager Brandon Leonatti; Jeffrey Croushore Author of Idlewild Images of America and Park Historian and Mother Goose and all her Story Book Friends.
"Our Story Book Forest is the only one of its kind in Pennsylvania and the Park's heart and soul and it is a big reason why Idlewild Park is one the best Park's in the world for kids and families," said General Manager Brandon Leonatti. "It is amazing and gratifying to note that in this high-tech age, our 50 year old low-tech imaginary world of Story Book Forest helps drive the region's economy by attracting over 500,000 guests annually and continues to be a place where children's dreams are fulfilled, with real story book friends. Many of these children have grown and return
with their own children and grandchildren."
Story Book Forest, itself, is a place for dreams. Visitors literally step through the pages of their favorite storybook to visit a land of imagination. A life-size re-creation of 44 scenes from classic childhood stories and nursery rhymes, Story Book Forest features many favorite characters that come alive in a shady sylvan setting. Originally designed by Arthur Jennings and opened in 1956 by C.C. Macdonald, former owner of Idlewild Park, the attraction became one of several theme areas of Idlewild after Kennywood Entertainment purchased the park in 1983.

The 44 scenes include many live characters such as Mother Goose, Raggedy Ann and Andy, Captain Candy, Goldilocks, Gepetto, The Old Woman Who Lived in the Shoe, Little Red Riding Hood, Mistress Mary, Snow White and more.
