From the Smithsonian AIC Description:
A large, deeply carved bas-relief panel featuring a semi-nude male standing with his feet crossed at the ankles, proper right leg over proper left leg. With his proper left hand he leans against a block of stone and with his right hand he holds a scroll up to his face. His head is bent and he looks down at the scroll. Painter's tools, a palette and brushes, are in the lower left corner. Sculptor's tools, a mallet and a chisel, are in the lower right corner. The bottom of the panel is cut in a zig-zag pattern.
From the Smithsonian AIC Remarks:
Gutterson and Corlett designed the Community Theater building, a Works Progress Administration project. Initial designs were drawn up in 1938 and construction began in the early 1940s. However, completion was delayed because of World War II, and the building was not completed until 1950.
