Location: The official address for Dumaurier Park is 2850 Dumaurier Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario. This community park is located in the Foster Farm neighbourhood of western Ottawa. Although the park itself is hard to miss, there is no major sign to indicate which park it is, or even that that it is a City of Ottawa park. The only formal indication that it is a City of Ottawa park occurs on a No Parking sign noting that violators are subject to towing.
Description: Dumaurier Park is very roughly diamond shaped, with its longest diagonal approximately 250 meters long, running generally north-south. The park takes its name from Dumaurier Avenue, which runs along the park’s northern and western boundaries, and which contains the two vehicular entrances for the park, one for each of the park’s two softball fields. Dumaurier Park is well served by public transit, with two local bus routes providing three bus stops along Dumaurier Avenue, as well as a major transit station for bus traffic moving along one of Ottawa’s major east-west traffic arteries, the Queensway.
Dumaurier Park serves the broader community almost exclusively as a venue for softball. The park consists of two full-sized, lighted, natural grass fields, and minimal supporting facilities. It has no room for, and does not support, any other sports, nor does it provide any of the traditional park facilities for families or smaller children, e.g., no play structures or swings. The park is recognized as an important venue for local softball leagues. For example, Internet pages show it as one of the parks for the Ottawa Softball League, for the Kanata Minor Softball Association, and for the Parkwood Hills Softball Association. Signage at Dumaurier Park makes it clear that both of the parking lots are reserved exclusively for users of the ball fields, with users for any other purposes subject to fines and towing.
The northern field has an impressive backstop to prevent balls from landing in traffic along the park’s eastern boundary marked by Pinecrest Avenue, a major north-south artery. The southern field is situated such that comparable protection for traffic is not required, and its backstop is smaller and less impressive. Support facilities for the two fields are minimal, consisting of one relatively small open-air bleacher for each field, small uncovered benches for the teams, one portable toilet to serve both fields, and a small utility building not for use by the public. There is no structure for a refreshment stand, and no apparent water or power source. Although Dumaurier Park does contain some small trees, primarily along its edges, the park’s landscaping consists primarily of mowed grass.
Dumaurier Park appears in the City of Ottawa's official database of municipal parks. It is searchable on Google Earth, and Google Maps, with several images of the park available via the latter’s Street View feature.
