Situé à une altitude de 1 197 mètres, le lac s’est formé par phréato-magmatisme, autrement dit il s'agit d'un maar. De forme presque parfaitement circulaire avec un diamètre de 700 à 800 mètres et une superficie de 44 hectares, il a une profondeur de 92 mètres, ce qui en fait le plus profond d'Auvergne visité par environ 200 000 personnes par an. La rivière Couze Pavin qui passe a 300 mètres du lac n'est que partiellement alimentée par ce dernier.
