In 1817 Phineas Bartlett ran a livery stable and harness shop on the property. He retired in 1850 and his son Theodore built the present residence using the front room as an office. Gordon Johnson bought the property in 1869 and ran a livery stable until 1916. When the house was renovated in modern times with the removal of the wall paper in the front room they found the prices at the stable written right on the walls.
