Bust of Samuel Hammond, officer from the American Revolution, set atop rough hewn granite stele, with bronze plaque on front describing his military and political career. Hammond is portrayed in a military uniform with his hair gathered together and tied with a bow in the back.
From the Smithsonian AIC Remarks:
The monument to Revolutionary officer and statesman, Samuel Hammond (1757-1842), was placed by the Augusta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as the filial tribute of his grandson, Hugh Vernon Washington.

The text on the base reads:

DIED AT VARELLO, NEAR AUGUSTA, SEPT. 1842
