This log building, built in 1878 is one of only three of the original buildings to have survived, the others being the stone powder house, built in 1878, and the nearby carriage house, built in 1880.

This building was built to house Noncommissioned Officers and their families. At one time it would have been surrounded by many other buildings of the period, all but one of which are gone now. BTW, this fort, though built at a time when Native uprisings in the area were still a concern, was built without walls.
