This old gas station is strategically located at the intersection of the old US 75 (King of Trails Highway, designated in 1919) and the Texas State Highway 21. SH 21, one of the original highways designated in Texas in 1917, remains in its historic route, although the US 190 now runs with SH 21 between Bryan and the I-45. The old route for the US 75 has been downgraded to Texas State Highway 75. The I-45, which bypasses Madisonville a few miles to the east, is the major road through here since the 1970s.
All that to say: in the 1920s and 1930s, this gas station sat at the intersection of two very important highways through Texas, and beyond.
