The Fine Arts Museum of Mulhouse is located in a listed building from the 18th century, just a few steps south of the historic town center.
The Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1864 on a private initiative, it became a municipal museum in 1958 and moved to the current location on its 100th anniversary.
The museum owns a collection of works from the 15th century up to the present day that includes painting of famous artists like Brueghel, Bouguereau, Boudin, Jongkind, and Courbet. Local Alsatian artist are also well presented with works of Henner, Giess, Lehmann, or Zuber.
The museum is open six times a week, free of charge.
The building was originally built as a textile printing factory in the late 18th century and was converted into a residence in the 19th century. It was donated to the municipality in 1894 and then used as a technology museum, a high school and then a history museum until it was finally converted into the Musée des Beaux-Arts in 1964.
