Tree Stump Hitching Post was carved by prisoners at Folsom Prison, Folsom, California. The prison was built and opened in the 1880s, so there were still plenty of horses around.

This is an unusual shape for a horse ship, with lots of texture detail to mimic a tree stump. The granite came from nearby Granite Bay, California. The hitching post is located in the front yard of the Folsom Prison Museum, on Prison Road, Folsom, California.

The nearby Prison Museum is a popular and interesting tourist attraction. You want to consider paying the $2.00 entrance fee. You can avoid the fee if you simply want to buy a souvenir in the shop. There are many prison artifacts in the front yard of the museum. Enjoy!
