The tree, a large Colorado Blue Spruce, was planted by the Missoula County Employees Council in union with all people of Missoula County. It was dedicated on October 11, 2001. In the ground in front of the tree is a polished granite plaque.

It is intended to remember the victims, honour the heroes and to celebrate Unity.
