"Erdstale" sinf künstliche Höhlen unterirdische Gangsysteme, labyrinthartig unter Kirchhügeln, Friedhöfen und bäuerlichen Siedlungen angelegt wurden. Besonders zahlreich sind sie in den Lössgebieten des nordöstlichen Alpenvorlands, von Ungarn über Österreich und Süddeutschland bis nach Frankreich. Das Gangsystem vol Althöflein gilt mit einer Länge von 270 Metern als die grösste zusammenhängende Erdstallanlagen des deutschsprachigen Raumes.
Altersbestimmungen von Inschriften und anderen Funden ergeben eine Zeit von Jahr 950 bis 1200. Wahrscheinlich wurden die Erdställe während der mittelalterlichen Rodungs- und Besiedlungsperiode angelegt.
Wozu die Erdställe ursprünglich gegraben wurden, ist unklar. Es könnte sich um Kultstätten oder symbolische Leergraben handeln, die von Siedlern für die Seelen ihrer Ahnen angelegt wurden. Ebenso ist möglich, dass die Erdställe als Zuflucht und Versteck dienten. Dafür spricht, dass Erdställe häufig in Verbindung mit mittelalterlichen Wehranlagen stehen. Andererseits hätten diese Gangsysteme entscheidende Nachteile gehabt - der Sauerstoff wäre durch die Zufluchsuchenden schnell verbraucht gewesen. "Erdstale" ("caves in the soil") are artificial caves, a subterraneous systém of galleries, that were bulit in a labyrinth-like manner below churchhills, graveyeards and peasant villages. They are especially frequent in the regions of loess of the north-eastern pre-alps and can be found from Hungary via Austria and the southern part of Germany until France. The cave systém of Althöflein, with a length of around 270m, is the largest systém of connected caves of soil within German-speaking region.
The age determination of inscriptions and findings of shards and wood leads back to the time perion of around years 950 to 1200. Probably, the "Erdställe" were bulit during the middle-age perio¨d of clearing and settlement.
It is unclear for which purpose these caves were originally made. It is possible that they served as a cult site, or as symbolic empty graves which were made by the settlers for the souls of their ancestors. A further theory says that the caves were used as a recourse or hideout. An argument supporting this theory is that the caves are frequently connected with middle-age fortifications. On the other hand, these systems would have had decisive drawbacks - The fugitives very quickly would have consumed the oxygen. Furthermore, if the enemy had set fire on the building above the cave systém, the people in the cave would have suffocated very quickly. High humidity and frequent floodings, furthermore, render a use as a stock room unlikely.

Podzemní katakomby jsou umelé jeskyne, podzemní systémy chodeb, které byly vybudovány formou labyrintu pod kostely na návrších, pod hrbitovy a selskými obydlími. Casto se vyskytují ve sprašových oblastech a na území pri úpatí severovýchodních Alp, táhnou se od Madarska pres Rakousko a od jižnícho Nemecka až do Francie. Systém chodeb v Althöfleinu je dlouhý kolem 270 metru a predstavuje nejvetší souvislý systém podzemních chodeb v nemecky mluvících zemích.
Podle nápisu a jiných nálezu lze usuzovat, že se jedná o období kolem let 950 až 1200. Pravdepodobne byly systémy chodeb budovány behem stredovekého období klucení a osídlování.
Puvodní úcel podzemních chodeb není jasný. Mohlo se jednat o kultovní místa nebo symbolické prázdné hroby, které byly budovány pro duše jejich predku. Stejne tak je možné, že tyto katakomby sloužily jako útocište a skrýš. pro tuto domnenku hovorí skutecnost, že podzemní systémy chodeb se casto vyskytují v souvislosti se stredovekým opevnením. Naproti tomu mely ovšem podzemní systémy chodeb rozhodující nevýhodu - clovek zde rychle spotreboval dýchatelný kyslík. Založení požáru budovy mel za dusledek okamžitou smrt udušením. Vysoká vlhkost vzduchu a casté záplavy vylucují využití chodeb pro skladování zásob.
