Leverett was incorporated in 1774 and split off from Sunderland, then called Swampfield. It was mainly an agricultural town, including he growing of tobacco. There was some mills that harnessed the power from the Sawmill River, Doolittle and Roaring Brooks, mainly grist and sawmills. A cottage industry grew up in the town making palm-leaf hats, which peaked in 1845 when 230 women were working out of their home making the hats. The railroad arrived in 1858, however bypassed the center of town. This marked the decline of industrial operations in Leverett since other towns were more suited and situated.
