At the very centre of piazza Solferino, one of the prettiest spots of Turin, an equestrian statue can be found. Ferdinand of Savoy, Duke of Genoa is depicted here sitting of his wounded horse probably during a famous battle of Novara (1849), where he was acting as commanding-general. The statue was dedicated in 1877 and it was made by Italian sculptor Alfonso Balzico (1825 – 1901). The statue is remarkable for the life-like expression of the wounded horse, with extended nostrils and gasping breath, sinking under the burden of his gallant rider. The horse is depicted very realistically as it slumps to the ground out of sheer fatigue during the Battle of La Bicocca, near Novara, at the end of the first, disastrous War of Independence.
