Located on a lawn in front of the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center on the Eisenhower Medical Center campus is a an abstract sculpture made of bronze. The sculpture contains an inscription on one side that reads 'PASTORIUS' and there's a small plaque in front of the piece that reads:
THE TUNNEL
by
Harold Pastorius
Donated by
Gregg G. Juarez
After doing some online research for Pastorius I was able to locate a collection of his work on the Smithsonian Art Inventory website here. He lived from 1936 to 1995. There is very little additional information on him online but I did find a YouTube video of him here. The video portrays a good background of him in his element, working with his favorite sculpting material, Cor-Ten Steel, and explaining how he goes about designing his pieces and the costs involved in producing them. There are a number of his sculptures located as part of Art in Public Places throughout Southern California and Arizona in addition to pieces around the United States. The largest collection of his works can be seen in the City of Brea, CA.
The Tunnel stands outside and between to palm trees next to to the Children's Center and is somewhat obscured from view. The earth-tone colors of the steel sculpture blends in with the hues of the nearby palm trees, and actually blends into the scenery of the landscaping and architecture of the nearby building. The 3D piece invites the viewer to engage it by walking around it and to see it at different angles, getting different perceptions and interpretations. This sculpture might have been better served being located out in the open and more visible instead of being tucked away in the corner of the property.
