On the south wall of the old St.Peter's Church in the large corner plot at the junction of High Street with Market Hill is this large sundial, slightly angled to align it true east-west. It is painted white with gold markings for hours, halves and quarters, Roman numerals for the hours from VI in the morning to VI in the evening around the perifery, a half sun at the gnomon point and the Latin inscription at the top 'NON SINE LUMINE' which can be translated as 'Not without illumination'.
When I took my photograph 3rd August, the dial was some 8mins slow relative to BST which is strange as this time system was not introduced until 21st May 1916 following pressure by one William Willett, a keen horse-rider who bemoaned the fact that daylight was being wasted in the summer months by following the sun's time. The clock change was also proposed in New Zealand in 1895 but not introduced until 1927, and in Germany a few weeks earlier than here in 1916.
So, is the clock fast or slow, or even correct by Maldon time! Most likely fast as the XII is at centre bottom.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
