Joseph Montfort was a Mason and was appointed as the only Grand Master of America in 1771. His single grave is located at the Royal White Hart Lodge No. 2 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
Montfort was a Patriot and a Colonel of Colonial Troops in North Carolina. Although he lived to see North Carolina declare its independence from England in 1775, he did not live to see the Declaration of Independence signed in July 1776. He passed away from ill health in March 1776. A Daughters of the American Revolution marker at his grave reads "Revolutionary War Patriot."
His gravestone reads:
THE RIGHT WORSHIPFULJOHN MONTFORT

Montfort's grave is surrounded by a metal fence. The gate states that only the Grand Master of the Lodge may open the gate to admit a Pilgrim Mason. But, yeah, I opened it anyway to take a few photos in Montfort's honor.
