A four part series telling the story of Percy Toplis, who led a mutiny at Etaples in the First World War.
In his youth Topliss had several run ins with the police. At the outset of the war Toplis enlisted in the army. He developed a habit of leaving camp dressed as an officer, complete with monocle.
At Etaples there is a mutiny by troops. Toplis negotiates with the top brass and becomes a marked man for his troubles. He uses his officer disguise to escape. At the end of the war Toplis rejoins the army under an assumed name. He is, however, recognised by a fellow mutineer, and gets involved in the black market. The police track Toplis down and he is shot.
